How to use a foam roller to ease lower back pain

Foam RollerA few years ago, during one of my bad lower back pain stints, I went out and bought a foam roller. It was one of the best things I ever did (as well as start bed yoga of course!). It’s astonishing how lower back pain can often be caused by too much sitting. But how?

Well, in a nutshell, when we sit for too long, the muscles in our hip flexors get so tight that over time they contract, which can cause pain in the lower back, as well as tightness in the thighs. I suffered terribly with it until I started a regular yoga practice.

How to use a foam roller

A foam roller is, essentially, like having a deep tissue massage but without the cost, or having to travel to the nearest spa every other day. All you do is roll over it. Yep, it’s as easy as that. But if that’s not quite clear enough for you, then check out my video (above) on how to use a foam roller, and you’ll see how simple it is. Not to mention affordable.

Bear in mind, though, that using a foam roller isn’t as effective as a yoga class. You need to stretch out those hip flexors as often as possible to fully relieve the pain. A foam roller is a wonderful addition to any yogi’s home practice though.

By the way, I mentioned spas… my nearest spa is Macdonald Monchique. I haven’t visited yet but I’m hoping to soon. I’ll keep you posted on that!

If you’re enjoying these free videos, head on over to my Youtube channel and subscribe. I really need at least 100 subscribers before I can officially name my channel (which makes it easier to find). I’d really appreciate your help. Also, if you’re LOVING my videos and would like downloadable versions that you can watch anytime, anywhere, then head on over to my online Powhow studio where, for as little as $7 a month you can have full access to all these videos and more (there’s more coming every week). If you pop on over to my Facebook page before the end of September, there’s a coupon code (in the pinned post) that you can use to get your first month half price. So, for just $3.50 you can download some great gentle hatha yoga videos! Cool, huh?!

Thanks folks!
